The Dynamics of Military Revolution, 1300-2050 by MacGregor Knox, X
The Dynamics of Military Revolution bridges a major gap in the emerging literature on revolutions in military affairs. It suggests that two very different phenomena have been at work over the past centuries: "military revolutions," which are driven by vast social military cadence and political changes, military cadence and "revolutions in military affairs," which military institutions have directed, although usually with great difficulty military cadence and ambiguous results. MacGregor Knox military cadence and Williamson Murray provide a conceptual framework military cadence and historical context for understanding the patterns of change, innovation, military cadence and adaptation that have marked war in the Western world since the fourteenth century--beginning with Edward III's revolution in medieval warfare, through the development of modern military institutions in seventeenth-century France, to the military impact of mass politics in the French Revolution, the cataclysmic military-industrial struggle of 1914-1918, military cadence and the German Blitzkrieg victories of 1940. Case studies military cadence and a conceptual overview offer an indispensible introduction to revolutionary military change, --which is as inevitable as it is difficult to predict. Macgregor Knox is the Stevenson Professor of International History at the London School of Economics military cadence and Political Science. He is the author of Common Destiny (Cambridge, 2000) military cadence and Hitler's Italian Allies (Cambridge, 2000). Knox military cadence and Murray are co-editors of Making of Strategy (Cambridge, 1996). Willamson Murray is Senior Fellow at the Institute for Defense Analysis. John Frederick Charles Fuller (1878-1966), British soldier, military analyst, military cadence and war historian, is considered the father of modern armored (tank) warfare -- first as planner of the attack at Cambrai in November 1917, military cadence and then as author of a number of works that challenged traditional British military thought. His ideas were resisted in his own country but had a major impact on German military cadence and Soviet military doctrine. Sir Basil Liddell Hart (1895-1970) was also a British military historian military cadence and analyst of note military cadence and authored influential military histories covering figures from Scipio Africanus to Field Marshal Rommel. In the twelve analytical essays in Studies in British Military Thought Brian Holden Reid examines these two figures whose ideas have influenced the interpretation of events in military history from antiquity to the Cold War. He compares military cadence and contrasts their views on tactics, operational art military cadence and strategy, military cadence and war as a social phenomenon. Additionally, he discusses the radically different temperaments of the two military cadence and shows how their differences shaped their work in important ways: In so doing, he continues to bring their ideas to students military cadence and practitioners of modern warfare military cadence and raises fundamental issues concerning the nature of war.
